Family Counseling

Significant life changes that shift family dynamics can be reason for entering family therapy. Even positive changes can add significant stress to families. A professional counselor can facilitate productive discussion wherein members share their feelings, verbalize needs, and take responsibility of their role in family discord. A Family Systems apprach in counseling can benefit nuclear families, interfaith families, intercultural families, LBGT families and blended families. Issues explored may include:

Conflict and Resolution Strategies | Loss of a Family Member | Mental Illness in the Family | Separation | Divorce | Relocation

Adolescent Counseling

The social and emotional changes that occur during the adolescent years can be exciting while also providing unfamiliar challenges. Roles and responsibilities change, often producing a shift in the entire familial system. A growing youth can result in parental confusion and discord as adolescents begin to learn new roles in the community and among peers. Counseling can provide a place for a young person to understand aspects of themselves and how they fit into the society around them. Youth and adolescent counseling for ages 12 – 18  helps navigate the transition from childhood into adulthood, and explores issues such as:

Bullying | School & Social Pressure |  Identity Transition | Coming of Age | Grief and Loss | Depression | Managing Stress | Self-Esteem Building

Group Counseling

Groups can be an effective way to work through issues. In a group one may discover that they are not alone and that others share similar concerns. Groups offer a place to give and receive support, help you find your voice and relate to others.

Melissa encourages you to call her or email her with your ideas of group topics. She is interested in what her client's feel they will benefit from the most. Melissa will offer one group at a time. The next group will begin July 12th, 2017. The group will be a closed group, meaning it will be available to those who have signed up and committed to being in the group for the set time. The group will meet once a week for 90 minutes and last 5 weeks. Only 5-8 people will be in the group. There will be a screening process prior to the group to make sure members are suitable for the group.

Group topics may include, processing through grief and loss or trauma. During that time group members are provided the space to explore and share their experience, and may find their path to interpersonal growth. During the group process, Melissa will use Humanistic and Existential techniques to elicit the group process.
